Get into the habit of checking your air filter on a monthly basis! Proper airflow is one of, if not the most critical factor, in making sure your air conditioning system is running properly. Although you may have an air filter that is rated to last longer than a month – high system usage, pets, smoking and other environmental factors can shorten the lifespan of the air filter. If you have a reusable filter, cleaning it on a monthly basis will make sure your system is working at its best.
Check your circuit breakers before calling for service! Sometimes the reason the system is not coming on is because a circuit breaker will be tripped. A common cause of a tripped circuit breaker is lightning. Since lightning storms in Central Florida are common during the summer months – check your breaker before calling for a service call.
Make sure you have preventative maintenance services done at your equipment manufacturer’s recommended intervals! Regular maintenance on your air conditioning system prevents down time due to equipment failure. To quote Benjamin Franklin, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
Add a vinegar solution to your condensate drain when you check your air filter! Mix half a cup of warm water and half a cup of any type of vinegar and pour it down your condensate drain line at the access port (typically at the PVC pipe “T”). By doing this, it helps prevent organic growth from causing your condensate line to backup and leak water.
